Environment Awards

Learn all about the annual WFRA Environment Awards.

The WFRA Environment Awards are an opportunity to support and celebrate the work of our fell running community across Wales and the Borders in addressing climate change, sustainability and environmental issues and encourage further progress.

We have two award categories available: Race Organiser and Individual

Race Organiser award
Recognises Race Organisers who are leading the way in making their fell races more sustainable.

Individual award
Recognises inspiring individuals who are taking action to make their fell running activities more sustainable.

We want to know who inspires you and which of your peers you think are doing great work in this area, therefore you cannot nominate yourself – we would like you to nominate others. The winners receive free WFRA membership for the next year and money towards further improving or encouraging their climate and sustainability actions.

Nominations for 2025 are now open!

Ready to nominate someone? → Please read the guidance below then submit your entry to environment@welshfellrunnersassociation.org.uk

Closing date: 9 January 2026. Winners will be announced in early 2026.

Nominations guidance
Please read the guidance below before emailing us. We look forward to receiving your nominations!

How do I nominate someone?

We want to know who inspires you and which of your peers you think are doing great work in this area, therefore you cannot nominate yourself – we would like you to nominate others. Nominations can be submitted in Welsh or English.

Ensure the person you are nominating meets the eligibility criteria below (What are you looking for? section). We also recommend reading our Climate Change and Environment Guidance to see examples of the types of climate and environmental actions that can be taken within the fell running community. Please provide us with the following information.

About you:

  • Your full name, email address, and your club (if applicable)

About the person you are nominating:

  • Their full name, email address (if known - so we can contact them in case they win!) and club (if applicable)
  • Category (you can nominate the same person for both categories, but you must submit two separate entries)
  • Name and location of fell race/s (Race Organiser category only)

About why you think they should win:

  • Your answers to the criteria below (What are you looking for? section). Aim to write between 50 and 200 words. Please make sure you cover the nomination criteria as best you can so we have as much information as possible about why the person you are nominating deserves to win:
    • Race Organiser: Think about their (1) action, (2) impact and (3) engagement
    • Individual: Think about (1) how they move, (2) how they kit up, (3) how they eat, and (4) how they speak out.

If you have been nominated, we will contact you in due course to let you know.

What are you looking for?

Race Organiser
Race Organiser nominations will be judged against three criteria:

  1. Action: Tell us what they did and why.
  2. Impact: Tell us what difference their actions have made e.g., have they addressed aspects of their race that had the biggest environmental or climate change impacts? Are they planning to continue doing this and/or build on this further?
  3. Engagement: Tell us how they have engaged with others about their actions. Have they communicated their actions to people attending the race? Have they collaborated with others to make changes?

Individual
Individual nominations will be judged against the four pillars from The Green Runners. Don’t worry if you have more to say for one of these pillars than another – the nomination will be judged in the round for all the pillars:

  1. How you move: Tell us how they travelled to their fell running activities. Why have they done this?
  2. How you kit-up: Tell us about the kit (i.e. clothing, shoes, accessories) that they use in their fell running activities. Why have they chosen these? Have they changed the way they purchase their kit?
  3. How you eat: Tell us about their sports nutrition and diet. How do their food choices when fell running impact the environment (e.g. plastic packaging)? What environmental considerations do they make in their everyday diet?
  4. How you speak out: Tell us how they have engaged with others. Have they inspired others or worked collaboratively to create change? Have they shared their actions?
Is the person I want to nominate eligible for the awards?
