Environment Awards 2025: Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the WFRA Environment Awards 2025:
• Liam Glen – Individual Award
• Patrick Jarvis and Kani Hinshelwood (Blorenge fell race) - Race Organiser Award
Individual winner
Liam Glen was nominated in the Individual category for his commitment to sustainable travel to the Black Mountains fell race in September 2025.
Liam used active travel and public transport to get to the race – cycling from home, taking the train, then cycling to the start. He then won the race and repeated the journey home (alongside a large wooden club and bottle of beer as his prizes!).

For Liam’s nomination, the judges were told that:
Whilst a few people will now cycle etc to fell races, the ability to do this and win the race, with an excellent time, sets an incredible example of what is possible, also blowing away any idea that this journey to the race could cost you a position... I think this is a really inspiring example of what can be done. It’s more than just one person moving, kitting up and eating differently as an example others can follow...it’s a combined set of actions that create a truly inspiring example of what is possible and that challenges the status quo.
We agreed and thought it was a fantastic example of how sustainable travel is not in conflict with performance. Liam told us:
I'm absolutely delighted to have been chosen for the Individual Environment Award! It feels funny to be rewarded for something I do for fun, but hopefully it shows that leaving the car at home can coexist with getting to races and still giving them your best shot. In fact, I like to think that the time on the bike helps me get into the right mindset for racing, as well as making the whole day feel like much more of an adventure than it would otherwise. What's not to like?!
Race Organiser winners
Patrick Jarvis and Kani Hinshelwood were jointly nominated for the Race Organiser category for the Blorenge fell race in November 2025. They have won this award for the second year in a row and set a fine example for other Race Organisers to follow.

People mentioned their use of homemade fabric race numbers, encouraging car sharing and public transport (including providing a shuttle from the railway station), collecting statistics on how people travel to the race, vegan recipe prizes with a homemade fabric tote bag, a kit swap table with remaining items donated locally.
While not specific to the environment, their “great communication skills” were also mentioned along with their commitment to the Welsh language - encouraging runners to thank marshals in Welsh and printing the race’s Welsh name on the tote bags.
People who nominated them said:
I would like to nominate [them] […] for the overwhelming care they take to ensure that their race has the absolute least possible detrimental effect on the environment & to minimise the race's carbon footprint.”
“They are just inspirational.”
“They gave me a lift from the station when I would have driven otherwise. I got a heap of 2nd hand kit from the kit swap. The kit swap was amazing - so grateful.”
“They are real role models and environmental champions with the Blorenge race. It's so lovely to see environmental impact front and centre.
Paddy and Kani told us:
We’re incredibly proud to receive the WFRA Race Organiser Environment Award. After seeing a wild fire on the Blorenge in 2025, and the continued impacts of climate change on the landscape we love, the environmental responsibility of the race has never felt more important. This award really reinforces our commitment to running the Blorenge Fell Race in a way that encourages thoughtful, sustainable enjoyment of our landscape.
Thanks to those who sent in nominations. The winners receive free WFRA membership for the next year and money towards further improving or encouraging their climate and sustainability actions.
