The Hammer runners turnaround at the trig, whilst the Flow Test runners go off into the wilderness...however, as it is part of the SW winter series, the open fell sections will be marked with flags. These aren’t necessarily the best option, but the option that I happened to mark out on the morning of the race. (I tend to find a different sheep trod every time!) If you follow them, they will get you to the checkpoints. You don’t need to follow the flags, but you must go to the checkpoints!

The Hammer is not part of the SW winter series, but it is a good introduction to fell running. A recce is always worthwhile A lot of time can be gained (or lost) by cutting a few corners on the route... be warned- runners often come back with blooded legs, after dropping off too soon from the final ridge descent. Start and finish is in a private field and they will be marked to a stile – from there on you need to find your way to all the checkpoints in order. The route is fairly straightforward, if weather is good. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

The Hammer route will be easier to navigate and suitable for all! The Sledge is still having a rest this year, but may return.
